In a sleepy rural community, Ji Gang-Hee was raised in Motel California, a modest wayside lodging owned by her father. Being a mixed-race mother's daughter, she was frequently the focus of local rumors, which left her emotionally damaged. She loved Chun Yeon-Soo, her first love and childhood buddy, despite her traumatic past. But resolved to forge a future apart from her small-town roots, she departed for Seoul at the age of twenty.
