The Heirs tells the story of Kim Tan (Lee Min-Ho), a wealthy heir to a big company, and Cha Eun-Sang (Park Shin-Hye), a girl from a poor family. Eun-Sang lives with her mute mother, who works as a housekeeper, while Eun-Sang helps by working part-time jobs. She dreams of a better life and decides to visit her older sister in the U.S. when her sister calls to say she’s getting married.

When Eun-Sang arrives in California, she is shocked to find her sister living in a messy home with a lazy boyfriend and no plans for the future. Her sister even steals the money Eun-Sang brought to help her get married and leaves without saying goodbye. Heartbroken, Eun-Sang’s dreams of a better life fall apart.

Meanwhile, Kim Tan, who is staying at a beach restaurant in California, sees Eun-Sang’s problems unfold. After a misunderstanding involving a powder in her suitcase, he helps her out. Eun-Sang ends up at a police station, and with nowhere else to go, Kim Tan offers her a place to stay. They come from completely different worlds, but they begin to grow close. However, Kim Tan’s fiancée, Rachel (Kim Ji-Won), shows up and forces Eun-Sang to leave.

Eun-Sang returns to South Korea, leaving Kim Tan feeling empty. He decides to go back to Korea, even though his older stepbrother Won (Choi Jin-Hyuk) doesn’t want him to. When Kim Tan gets home, he sees someone who looks like Eun-Sang and finds out that she is now living in his house as the new housekeeper’s daughter.
